Recognition Programs

VSBA Academy Awards
The association recognizes board members for their dedication, time and hard work in improving boardmanship skills through VSBA meetings, conferences, board development and training, and active involvement in the association. VSBA members earn credits for VSBA Academy Awards which are based on participation from July 1 to June 30 of each year. There are five levels of awards, with certificates and pins awarded for particular levels.

VSBA Advocate for Education Award
Each year, the VSBA recognizes school board members who have demonstrated significant and outstanding leadership, commitment, and contributions to public education. The award will highlight the advocacy work of our school board members and encourage them to continue and bolster their efforts.

VSBA Regional School Board Member of the Year
Each year, the VSBA recognizes one outstanding school board member from each of the nine VSBA regions who exemplifies local involvement in promoting student achievement. This was previously known as the VSBA All Virginia School Board Award.

VSBA Board of Distinction
Each year, the VSBA identifies school boards that will be designated as a VSBA Board of Distinction. Boards must apply for the designation and must meet specific requirements in four key areas: planning, policy, promotion, and board development. If eligible, the board will receive a plaque to hang on the wall of their boardroom designating the board as a VSBA Board of Distinction.

VSBA School Board of the Year
Each year, one outstanding local school board is named the VSBA School Board of the Year to recognize its efforts. Nominated school boards must be members of VSBA at the time of nomination and selection.
