The VSBA Annual Convention is the largest and most anticipated VSBA meeting of the year. This event brings together over one thousand school board members, superintendnets, and school division staff from across Virginia. Attend general sessions, choose from over 50 hot topic breakout sessions, have the opportunity to meet with businesses dedicated to serving schools, and much more. Pre-Convention Events

2016 golf tournament

The 2016 VSBA Golf Tournament will be hosted by Moseley Architects. The tournament will take place on Tuesday, November 15, 2016 at the Golden Horseshoe Golf Club on the Green Course, with shotgun at 10:30AM. School Board members and school personnel are free to play! For more information on the tournament and to sign up, click here- registrations are due by November 4, 2016.

Foundation Workshop

The Virginia School Boards Association would like to invite you to a workshop for education foundation professionals, volunteers and those interested in starting an education foundation in your school division. The workshop, held in conjunction with the VSBA Annual Convention, will feature education foundation representatives from Virginia discussing strategic communications, goal setting and planning for your Foundation’s success. There will also be a chance to share best practices from your education foundation and pick up some great tools that you can use as soon as you return to your foundation.

Early Bird Sessions

Strong Community Engagement? When Pigs Fly!
Participants will learn a series of practical, proven ways to increase community awareness of division success stories and ways to become involved in supporting schools’ efforts. By the end of the class, the group will have created a sample engagement/marketing/branding plan workable for school systems regardless of size or trained communications staff support.

Parliamentary Procedures 2.0
Can one ever have too much training on parliamentary procedure? Never, you say? Here is a three-hour hands-on session that will help you become more efficient and your board more efficient. Training will include unique hands-on projects and role playing.  This session always fills up, so sign up early!

Separate registration is required to attend the Early Bird Sessions. Please register for an Early Bird session when registering for the Convention, or contact VSBA to add an early bird to your registration. The cost for each session is $100.

Mark Brown is a dynamic speaker whose unique blend of insight and humor leaves his audiences entertained, uplifted and inspired. Originally from Kingston, Jamaica, he incorporates "everyday things of life" into his powerful presentations. His unique style has delighted audiences from Bahrain to Boston as he helps people overcome their fears and reach their maximum potential.


Steve Pemberton is Vice-President, Diversity and Inclusion and Global Chief Diversity Officer for Walgreens Boots Alliance. Prior to that he served as Chief Diversity Officer for Walgreens. He is widely considered a subject matter expert on matters of diversity and inclusion and its importance to the sustainability of organizations and the communities they serve.


Murray Banks is an honored educator and world champion athlete. As an educator, Murray’s imaginative and innovative teaching techniques earned him the Vermont
Teacher-Of-The-Year for Physical Education and the Outstanding Educator Awards from AAHPERD. As a coach, he turned long time losing programs into perennial State Champions.  As an athlete, he has twice been one of the top finishers in the Ironman Triathlon World Championship in Hawaii and is a  3-time World Champion in skiing. 






















The VSBA Annual Convention Student Achievement Fair highlights outstanding initiatives from school divisions across the commonwealth. Programs and practices will be selected based on creativity and impact on student achievement. Because of the limited number of spaces available, please limit submission to one per school division (you may, however, submit one project and one performing group from the same division).

The VSBA Exhibition of School Architecture is held annually in conjunction with the VSBA Annual Convention. The goal of the exhibition is to raise awareness among board members about the relationship between good design and effective teaching and learning. VSBA invites your firm to submit exemplary projects. Project will be judged, and exceptionalprojects will garner recognition.

The Virginia School Boards Association is asking students to express their thoughts and ideas around the theme “Workforce Readiness” through our fourth annual student video contest. Schools are invited to submit a 30 second video that conveys the contest theme. The top 3 videos, along with those identified by the judges as Honorable Mentions, will be recognized at the VSBA Annual Convention. Videos will be judged on how well they address the topic as well as the quality of the production and the creativity of the video. No professional assistance can be provided to produce the video. The format of the video is up to the students. Videos can be a commercial, news broadcast, music video, etc. Please note, only videos by high school students will be judged.

The Virginia School Boards Association, in conjunction with participating VSBA Annual Convention exhibitor sponsors, is offering a scholarship to a deserving high school senior graduating in the spring of 2017. To be eligible, an applicant must be a graduating senior who served as a student school board representative during their junior or senior year and be in good standing with VSBA.

The successful applicant will be selected based upon the VSBA Exhibitors Scholarship Committee's assessment of the applicant's academic achievement, character, school and community service, and career goals. The recipients will be announced at the 2016 VSBA Annual Convention (November 16-18, 2016). The Virginia School Boards Association is once again inviting school divisions across the state to participate in “Signs of Success” at the VSBA Annual Convention. To participate, divisions are asked to create and submit a poster illustrating their favorite success story.
