The Poverty Factor
Kimberly Jowers and Dr. Katrina Spigner, Resource Solutions
Whether we encounter it on a daily basis or choose to believe that it has no impact on our lives, poverty is a part of our reality. It is easier to discuss what “they” could or should do to change, rather than explore the self-imposed and systemic barriers that hinder individuals in generational poverty from achieving self-sufficiency.
The Poverty Factor, facilitated by Resource Solution’s Kimberly Jowers and Dr. Katrina Spigner, is an interactive experience that is designed to help individuals, leaders, organizations and communities examine the experiences of individuals in generational poverty, discover hidden personal biases and develop strategies for change. It challenges each participant to discover their limits and then go beyond them at the individual and community level to redesign programs and approaches that better serve the individuals with whom we have contact.
This training offers a deeper understanding of the challenges and needs of people in poverty and the know-how to partner with them to create successful outcomes that build healthy individuals; thereby creating healthy communities.
Separate registration is required to attend the Early Bird Session. Please register for the Early Bird Session when registering for the Annual Convention, or contact VSBA to add this session to your registration. The cost for the Early Bird Session is $110.

student video contest
The Virginia School Boards Association is asking students to express their thoughts and ideas around the theme “Choice” through our sixth annual student video contest. This topic is about all the choices students have when it comes to a public education in Virginia. Schools are invited to submit a 30 second video that conveys the contest theme. The top 3 videos, along with those identified by the judges as Honorable Mentions, will be recognized at the VSBA Annual Convention. Videos will be judged on how well they address the topic as well as the quality of the production and the creativity of the video. No professional assistance can be provided to produce the video. The format of the video is up to the students. Videos can be a commercial, news broadcast, music video, etc. Please note, only videos by high school students will be judged.
The deadline for submissions has now passed. For any questions, please contact Amanda Leonard, coordinator of board development, at firstname.lastname@example.org. VSBA would like to extend a special thank you to the Student Video Contest sponsor, Milestone Communications.

signs of success
The Virginia School Boards Association is once again inviting school divisions across the state to participate in "Signs of Success" at the VSBA Annual Convention. To participate, divisions are asked to create and submit a poster illustrating their favorite success story. The success can be large or small - no achievement is insignificant - as long as your division wants to share it and celebrate it with others. Please click here for details on how reserve your spot in the VSBA "Signs of Success" poster session exhibit. The submission deadline has now passed. If you have any questions, please contact Kim Hodges at email@example.com.
