Collaborative efforts between two school systems - Bristol Virginia and Bristol Tennessee, River’s Way – a non-profit organization, and Central Christian Church have evolved into Café Central. Café Central is a program which helps prepare students with disabilities for entering the workforce after graduation. The program started with students doing a community garden. When the garden proved successful, the students moved to building hoop houses to grow vegetables all year long. The program progressed into a pre-vocational class. The students plant the garden, care for it, harvest what they have grown and prepare all of the meals for the cafe. Central Christian Church donates the property for the hoop houses and the kitchen/fellowship hall for the café. River’s Way helps create and coordinate activities between the two school divisions, community, and church. Community members enjoy wonderful lunches two days a week and the students are gaining valuable workforce skills and confidence.
