Giles County Agricultural Land Lab

Categories: Giles County, Workforce Readiness and Career & Technical Education | 2016

Description:

The goal of the Giles County Agricultural Land Lab is to create a hands-on learning experience for students to study all aspects of production agriculture. To this end, 38 acres of land adjacent to Giles High School is utilized to raise beef cattle, study plant and animal life cycles, and produce a variety of vegetables which are put back into the school system. Incorporating a “learning by doing” philosophy, students from Giles County schools are given the opportunity to gain authentic, hands-on agricultural experiences while gaining knowledge in SOL standards. Students are involved in every aspect of production, and have undertaken projects such as building cattle handling facilities; building interior fencing; installing watering troughs; and designing, building, and installing a geothermal trough heater. The vegetables students grew and harvested from the Land Lab were provided to the schools’ summer lunch program and the local senior center.
