Be a Buddy

Categories: Henry County | 2017

Henry County Public Schools has been working to encourage school community members to Be a Buddy to students in need of positive adult role models. Local Sheriff’s deputies and Public Safety officials have responded in a large way! Every day of the week, there are deputies and EMTs in elementary, middle and high schools in the division. You can find them having lunch, reading, and practicing math skills with small groups of students. This partnership is benefitting the students as they enhance their social and academic skills, but is also proving to benefit the PSOs as they interact with families in the community.

STEM in Our Schools

Categories: Henry County | 2017

Elementary students in Henry County Public Schools are integrating STEM into everyday activities and lessons, thanks to visits from the division’s new STEM coordinator. The coordinator is collaborating with media specialists to design and co-teach STEM lessons to ensure that students are experiencing enhanced maker space opportunities, learning to code, and using technology such as Osmos, LEGO We Do, Sphero, Lil Bits, and Raspberry Pi in curricular application. Media specialists are consulting with the coordinator to develop additional lessons and support core teachers in implementing STEM integration in all areas of the elementary school.

Teaching and Learning Conference

Categories: Henry County | 2017

Henry County Public Schools dedicates two professional development days each school year (one in January, one in May) to hosting a Teaching and Learning Conference for its full-time staff. Teachers and administrators come together at one of the division's high schools to learn from local experts, hear from consultants, and participate in keynote sessions focused on equity in the classroom. This event allows teachers to collaborate with colleagues across the division and learn more about ways they can implement new ideas in their classrooms right away with the support of their peers. Having just completed the division's fourth conference, planners are noting marked improvement in classroom instruction based on anecdotal observations and student growth data in areas of focus from each conference.
