Connection with CodeVA

Categories: Petersburg City | 2017

CodeVA is making a difference in Petersburg schools. Its mission to bring computer science education to Virginia kids meshes with Superintendent Marcus Newsome’s commitment to engaging instruction for all students. In these financially challenging times, the free training and laptops that CodeVA provides are especially welcome. This partnership began in October 2016: • For the first time, every school participated in Hour of Code, an international event that engages students in computer science. • 30 teachers participated in a workshop to learn to incorporate coding into instruction. Each teacher received a free laptop and the three schools represented each received a classroom set of laptops. The laptops are donated by Comcast and Altria to CodeVA, which refurbishes them. • Training more teachers, expanding to the middle school and high school and working to make sure Petersburg schools are prepared for Virginia’s upcoming computer science SOLs are in the works for this vibrant partnership.
