Dream with STREAM

Categories: Spotsylvania County, Workforce Readiness and Career & Technical Education | 2016

Description:

STREAM @ 3L is a STREAM (Science, Technology, Reading, Engineering, Art, and Math) project involving 45 Riverview Elementary students, 18 Thornburg Middle students, and 12 Massaponax High students. Through the project, the older students teach the younger students about STREAM concepts and coach them through a variety of hands-on STREAM simulations. The project was created as a response to the ongoing need of encouraging students to take an interest in science-related subjects. STREAM activities offer participants a unique opportunity to create excitement and interest in science. The hands-on learning projects included crime scene investigation, analyzing DNA, aquaponics, designing filtration systems, a Lego bridge design contest, and constructing marble racers. As a result of their innovative approach to learning, the STREAM team was invited to participate in the Regional STEM 16 Summit at the University of Mary Washington last spring hosted by the Fredericksburg Regional Chamber of Commerce’s STEM 16 Committee.

Leadership Learning Exchange: Leveraging Internal & External Resources to Support Staff Development

Categories: Spotsylvania County, Workforce Readiness and Career & Technical Education | 2016

Description:

Spotsylvania County Public Schools has designed an annual Leadership Learning Exchange that offers educators an opportunity to share skills and experiences while learning about new opportunities to support their own leadership and professional growth. Internal leadership and talent are utilized to share an education problem, the process used to solve the problem, the leadership skills necessary to solve the problem, and sustain improvement. This year, students participated by demonstrating their own leadership skills and offering their insights on what it is like to learn in today’s classroom with testimonials about 21st century teaching and learning that are making a difference for them. In addition, external resources from the surrounding community, including representatives from Virginia Community Colleges, Universities, and businesses, offer support and new perspectives on leadership topics, learning opportunities, and also their own resources to support ongoing leadership learning and problem solving after the Exchange.
