School meal debt racks up in Virginia after federal aid ended

For the first school year since before the COVID-19 pandemic, Virginia families have racked up school meal debt again.

While some school divisions with high concentrations of poverty, like Richmond Public Schools, are able to offer division-wide school meals for free using a federal program, some suburban areas like Henrico and Chesterfield counties do not meet those requirements.

Supervisors discuss school funding; approve various items

The Fluvanna Board of Supervisors met on Wednesday (April 5) for a relatively short regular meeting followed by a budget work session. Among the items approved were:

The proclamation observing Child Abuse Awareness Month;

The advertisement of a public hearing on May 17 on VDOT’s Secondary Six-Year Plan for area roads;

Henrico officials celebrate new Varina HS environmental specialty center

Henrico County Public Schools officials Wednesday celebrated the new Center for Environmental Studies and Sustainability at Varina High School during a grand opening event in partnership with Meta and the Henrico Education Foundation. The new high school specialty center is designed to help students get into the field for hands-on learning about the environment.

Shenandoah County Public Schools Teacher of the Year Nominations Announced

Shenandoah County Public Schools announced the staff recognitions for the 2022-23 school year. Each school may choose a Teacher of the Year, New Teacher of the Year, Team of the Year and Employee of the Year. The division Teacher of the Year, New Teacher of the Year, Team of the Year, and Employee of the Year are selected from these nominees.

All Virginia schools will soon be required to have defibrillators

Under a law recently passed by the General Assembly, Virginia will require public schools to acquire and maintain automated external defibrillators, or AEDs, a medical device commonly used to help a heart return to a normal rhythm in an emergency.

It’s unclear how many schools in the commonwealth already have defibrillators, but the new law will require school boards to develop a plan for their placement and care in every school. Under current law, schools have the option to develop their own plan.

Orange teacher of the year feels at home in school

For as long as Elaine Seal can remember, she has wanted to be a teacher.

The seventh-grade English teacher at Prospect Heights Middle School had an extensive career as a legal assistant before switching to education. But even as a child, she remembers playing school by herself, writing lessons and equations in chalk on the paneled walls of her old home.

And now Seal is not just any teacher, but she was also recently was named the 2023 Orange County Public Schools (OCPS) Teacher of the Year.

Loudoun schools’ bias-reporting system might violate free speech, court says

A program intended to address discrimination at Loudoun County Public Schools might violate the First Amendment, a federal appellate court ruled Friday, and a lawsuit challenging the program can move forward.

Roanoke School Board interviews wrap up

Roanoke City Council has wrapped up its school board candidate interviews Monday before making two appointments next month.

The council appoints school board trustees for three-year terms, and has now interviewed five people — two of them incumbents —for the two seats that will open up July 1.
