School Board reviews HCHS construction progress

The Halifax County School Board on Monday reviewed the latest progress on the Halifax County High School replacement project with plans for the new building coming into focus. RPS students show minimal progress with math, reading scores

Richmond public school students in the third to eighth grades continue to struggle with reading comprehension and with understanding math concepts, according to results from the state-mandated Virginia Growth Assessment (VGA). Seven months after the current school year started, students tested in the fall and on a follow-up winter test showed minimal progress, according a report provided to the School Board at the April 10 meeting.

City students make annual pilgrimage to Handley's tomb

WINCHESTER - When you've been doing something for decades, ceremonial traditions become set in stone. So it was Monday with Winchester Public Schools ' annual March to Handley's Tomb, an annual observation where students place flowers at the Mount Hebron Cemetery resting place for Judge John Handley, whose $250,000 financial gift to the city in 1895 - the modern-day equivalent of $8,983,214 - built Handley Library in 1913, Handley High School in 1923 and the Douglas School for African American students in 1927.
