Battlefield High educator named top tech teacher

George Bishop, technology education teacher at Battlefield High School, has been named an Engineering Outstanding Teacher of the Year by Project Lead The Way Inc. Bishop is one of just 16 educations selected nationwide for the distinction, according to a news release. The award honors teachers for their work and commitment to their students.

Stafford Co. students injured after crash caused school bus to flip on side - WTOP News

A school bus carrying 12 students in Stafford County, Virginia, flipped on its side after being hit by a car in a three-vehicle crash on Friday. Two students and two adults were taken to the hospital for treatment of injuries, according to the Stafford County Sheriff's Office. It happened around 3:30 p.m.

Waynesboro superintendent says state may increase school funding

At its last meeting of 2022 on Tuesday night, Waynesboro School Board members were given some good news. Superintendent Jeffrey Cassell told board members the school district might receive more state funding for the 2023-2024 school year than expected that can be used to increase pay for teachers.

Winchester school bus driver nominated for national award

WINCHESTER - Jill McDaniel, a bus driver for Winchester Public Schools, is one of two Virginia school employees nominated for a national education award. Virginia Superintendent of Public Instruction Jillian Balow and Secretary of Education Aimee Guidera nominated McDaniel and Melissa Overstreet, a secretary at Big Island Elementary School in Bedford County, for the U.S.

Second graders work with technical school students to build little libraries

Pittsylvania County Schools change from a 7-point grading scale to a 10-point grading scale

PITTSYLVANIA COUNTY, Va. (WDBJ) -Pittsylvania County Schools is changing the way they grade students and how often. The Pittsylvania County School Board voted to change from a 7-point grading scale to a 10-point grading scale. An A will now be from a 100 to a 90 instead of a 100 to a 94.

School division looks to replace aging buses

WOODSTOCK - Major projects in the draft version of Shenandoah County Public Schools' capital improvement plan for fiscal years 2024-2028 include the purchase of new school buses, a renovation of the bus garage, upgrades to HVAC units at various schools, the replacement of the original roofs at the division's three high schools and retrofits to each high school's stadium lighting.

Rockingham County Schools investigating field trip that left some parents upset

Rockingham County Public Schools' Central Office is investigating a field trip that was taken last week to JMU's Forbes Center for the Performing Arts after some parents have raised concerns. On December 8 3rd grade students from several county schools were taken to see part of a performance of a traditional Nigerian Dance from JMU's School of Dance that some parents found inappropriate.

2023 VSBA Capital Conference, January 30-31, 2023

This year’s two-day Capital Conference will kick off with a budget and economic outlook for 2023 with the latest update on the Commonwealth’s financial picture. After the budget presentation there will be a conversation between Former Virginia House of Delegate Chris Saxman and Dr. Bob Holsworth with their perspectives on the landscape of Virginia politics in 2023 and beyond. Following this session, attendees will hear from VSBA’s own, J.T. Kessler and Stacy Haney on the happenings at the Capitol for the 2023 Virginia General Assembly.
