State superintendent delivers revised history standards

The Virginia Department of Education released a new set of proposed history standards for Virginia's public schools. Superintendent of Public Instruction Jillian Balow delivered the draft revision of the K-12 history standards to the Board of Education Thursday night.

Newport News teacher shot by 6-year-old student is in stable condition, officials say

NEWPORT NEWS - A teacher shot by a student Friday afternoon at Richneck Elementary School "is improving," James Graves, the president of the Newport News Education Association, said Saturday afternoon. Newport News police and school officials declined to identify the teacher, or the suspect.

General Assembly may expand remedial reading program to middle schools

Students who spent their early school years online, learning to read are still - in many cases - below grade level. Last year lawmakers approved a bill to put more reading specialists in kindergarten, first, second and third grade classrooms and to provide teachers with more training and educational materials.
