RPS working to fill 150+ teacher vacancies

RICHMOND, Va. (WWBT) - Richmond City Public Schools is working to address the ongoing teacher shortage. Right now, the school division has more than 150 teacher vacancies. The school division says it is ahead of where it was last year when it came to filling teacher vacancies.

Harrisonburg School Board to host public hearing on proposed high school attendance zones

HARRISONBURG, Va. (WHSV) - Harrisonburg City Public Schools continues to work toward the fall 2024 opening of the new Rocktown High School. On Tuesday night the school board will hold a public hearing on its proposed attendance zones of Rocktown and the existing Harrisonburg High School.

School division announces Prince William County Outstanding Educators awards

Prince William County schools this week announced the winners of this school year's Outstanding Educators Awards. This year, the school division also recognized finalists for the novice teacher, teacher and principal of the year at the awards ceremony. The 2022-23 winners each received a $1,500 award sponsored by Apple Federal Credit Union.

Redbud Elementary student wins 1st place in art contest

Ten-year-old Joey Gil, a fifth grader at Redbud Run Elementary School in Frederick County, recently won first place in the elementary school category for the Virginia School Boards Association's Spring Regional Art Contest for the Valley Region.

Around a dozen Powhatan High School students banned from prom after prank

POWHATAN COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) - Around a dozen Powhatan High School students were banned from attending their prom after a senior prank which caused extensive damage to the school. 8News has learned that around a dozen students were banned from attending their senior prom, which took place Saturday, May 13, including the student who submitted a list of pranks that administrators approved ahead of the incident.

Fairfax Co. school board approves plan to provide students, staff access to Narcan in all classrooms - WTOP News

The Fairfax County, Virginia, school board approved a plan Thursday night to provide staff and students with access to fentanyl testing strips and to place Narcan in all classrooms. The board is also looking at the possibility of creating a special high school for kids to recover from addiction.

We will kick off the 38th annual VSBA Conference on Education with the 2023 Virginia Teacher of the Year, Ms. Fabiana Parker from Spotsylvania County Public Schools. Following her presentation VACORP will help present the 2023 Excellence in Workforce Readiness Awards. Next, join other school division leaders from across the state and choose from a variety of mini-workshops which highlight successful practices in Virginia’s school divisions.
