Hampton schools expanding dual language immersion program

In the Hampton program, students spend half the day learning in English, and half the day learning Spanish. Math and science are taught in Spanish, and social studies is taught in English. Language arts are taught separately in both languages.

Buford Middle School outlines plan for upcoming renovation

Teen shootings raise questions about school attendance

Another shooting involving Richmond students has once again focused attention on the high level of truancy the city schools experience. The latest gunfire incident around noontime April 27 involved two truant George Wythe High school students, both left injured. An 18-year-old has been arrested in the case.

Virginia teacher pay falls further behind the national average

RICHMOND, Va. -- Monday marks the beginning of National Teacher Appreciation Week, and a new study from the National Education Association shows Virginia's teacher pay is falling behind the rest of the country. According to the study, Virginia's estimated average teacher salary is $62,104 - and that's $6,365 below the estimated national average.

The Spotsylvania School Board on Monday will consider revisions to its policy and regulations concerning the reconsideration of challenged instructional materials that place more emphasis on whether or not the materials contain "sexually explicit" content.

Loudoun Schools Accreditation Affected Under New Chronic Absenteeism Model

Loudoun County Public Schools is looking to address chronic absenteeism after the Virginia Board of Education revised its accreditation model last month, changing the process to collect data for the previous year only. Chronic absenteeism is one of nine indicators in the state's school accreditation model.

STEM grants available for educators, nonprofits throughout Coastal Virginia

Coastal VA STEM Hub is accepting applications from teachers and nonprofit organizations for STEM-related initiatives, activities and programs. The group, which consists of several partners forming a regional "learning ecosystem," is administering the state-funded grants in partnership with Virginia Peninsula Community College and the City of Newport News.
