Many rural schools lack access to local food-this southwest Virginia program is working to change that

President Biden recently announced he wants to end childhood hunger in the U.S. by 2030, and increase access to nutritious foods. One of the strategies he announced is to provide more federal funding for schools who buy locally sourced fruits and veggies. But there are logistical challenges to connecting farmers with cafeterias.

Richmond school board to discuss possible cell phone ban after research shows violent threats among students

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) - Some Richmond school leaders say making schools a phone-free zone could prevent violent threats among students. The research, uncovered by the Digital Working Group, shows students accessed and created thousands of harmful content last school year using different platforms. Jonathan Young, a Richmond school board member, said there will be a discussion about the research at Monday night's school board meeting.

Roanoke City Public Schools is trying to increase security district-wide

ROANOKE, Va. (WDBJ) - Five years ago, they had five SSOs at every high school. Today, they have added one at almost every middle school. But have never had any at the elementary level. RPS teachers chosen for new curriculum task forces

Richmond Public Schools has unveiled its three task forces, each charged with taking a deep dive into either the division's reading, math or science curriculums. Earlier this month the Richmond School Board voted 5-4 to approve creating working groups to review the division's reading, math and science curriculums with the intention to develop a three-year plan to address curricula concerns, beginning in the 2023-24 academic year The three groups, each made up of 15 staff members, are scheduled to meet four times between Oct.

Fairfax Co. considering recruiting teachers from Barbados to address shortage - WTOP News

Leaders in Virginia's largest school system are working with the Barbados Ministry of Education to explore the possibility of recruiting teachers from the Caribbean island to address its staffing shortage. In an email to the Fairfax County School Board, obtained by WTOP via a Freedom of Information Act request, Superintendent Michelle Reid said the county is exploring "forming a partnership in an effort to bring qualified teachers to Fairfax County."
