The Amherst County School Board during a Sept. 29 work session reviewed the latest figures in the division's capital improvement plan for projects through the next 15 years. Amherst County Public Schools has $2 million in state money for school construction that can be used in a variety of ways for CIP needs through the next several years.

What's for lunch? For millions of school students, the answer may be fresh lettuce and tomatoes, apples and carrots grown by nearby farmers, or, in a few states, fresh lamb or haddock, raised or caught locally. Local foods, once rare on school lunch trays, are gradually becoming more available in school cafeterias as states promote fresh produce, legumes, meats and fish.

The Fairfax County School Board is sketching its next steps after a new report shows that students with disabilities in Virginia's largest school system are disproportionately suspended, when compared to their peers without disabilities.

The Hanover School Board requested more than $12,000 from the county's Board of Supervisors in response to a question about whether School Board members have disclosed private student information. Treating the question like a Freedom of Information Act request, the School Board said it would need to search through 4,900 emails in order to survey any potentially responsive emails.

Benjamin Thompson has been named the new principal of the Dowell J. Howard Center after logging nine years with Frederick County Public Schools. The decision was announced by the school division's interim Superintendent John Lamanna at Tuesday night's Frederick County School Board meeting, drawing a wave of applause from those in attendance.

NORTHUMBERLAND COUNTY, Va. - A Northumberland mom wants charges brought against a former substitute teacher after she said the substitute assaulted her three-year-old son. Jennifer Kelley said the assault happened on Aug. 31 at Northumberland Elementary. "I always check his book bag and in his book bag, they have a behavior chart," Kelley said.

Lynchburg City Schools administrators addressed the school system's accreditation ratings Tuesday following recent Virginia Department of Education data showing only half of Lynchburg City Schools received full accreditation for the 2022-23 school year. Bedford Hills, Paul Munro, Robert S. Payne, Sandusky, Sheffield and T.C.

HURLEY, Va. (WJHL) - Tuesday's fire at Hurley High School is just the latest disaster that students at the school have had to deal with. Every school dealt with the pandemic, but Hurley was hit with devastating flooding last year that left students and teachers displaced.

The Richmond School Board on Monday voted 5-4 to approve creating working groups to review the division's reading, math and science curriculums with the intention to develop a three-year plan to address curricula concerns, which would begin in the 2023-2024 academic year.
