FBI: School divisions 'lucrative targets' of cyber attacks due to sensitive student data

A Cybersecurity Advisory alert was issued last week after a school system in California was allegedly attacked by a group known as the Vice Society. According to the alert, the education sector, including school districts and colleges, has been a frequent target of ransomware attacks.

HARRISONBURG, Va. (WHSV) - U.S. Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona continued his Road to Success Back to School Bus Tour in Shenandoah Valley visiting schools across the country to better highlight what school districts and universities need and have done to support students through the pandemic.

MCPS to start mental health screening; checks already being done for reading, speech, vision

The Martinsville City Public Schools (MCPS) board met for its regular monthly meeting, getting a mental health update from MCPS School Psychologist Dr. Travis Worrell. All School Board members except Jim Woods also voted to retain legal counsel for reversion.

Bedford County School Board narrowly OKs plan for committee to review challenged books

The Bedford County school board has narrowly passed a structure and guidelines for a new division-level review committee that would be responsible for reviewing any formally challenged books in a school library. The proposed division level review committee comes in continued response to the local manifestation of a recent nationwide trend pushing to censor books deemed "inappropriate" by some individuals and politically affiliated groups.

UPDATED: Two students charged with bringing gun to Freedom High School in Woodbridge

Police have charged two 15-year-old students at Freedom High School in Woodbridge after one brought a gun to school, showed it off in a bathroom and handed it off to a friend. At 10:10 a.m., staff at the school on Neabsco Mills Road notified the school resource officer that there was a student in the school with a gun.

Virginia Beach School Board passes resolution establishing families as 'equal partners'

VIRGINIA BEACH - The Virginia Beach School Board passed a resolution Tuesday night on the "support and empowerment" of families. It was not the resolution originally offered by board member Laura Hughes, which she and her supporters began circulating several weeks ago.

Fredericksburg School Board agrees on 'value engineering' number for new middle school

The Fredericksburg School Board at its meeting Monday evening agreed to cut $2.7 million from the estimated cost of the city's new middle school.

School safety and roads were the main topics discussed Monday night during the monthly meeting of the Mecklenburg County Board of Supervisors.

All 63 county elementary schools will get security assistants, says McDade

Prince William County will spend more to protect elementary school students. Virginia's second-largest school district will hire security assistants at all 63 elementary schools. Qualifications for the job include high school education, prior security experience, and experience working with mentoring children. The starting pay is $39,471.

APS sees improvements in start-of-school bus service - Sun Gazette

Acknowledging that some challenges remain, Arlington's superintendent of schools reported what he considered "marked improvements" in school-transportation matters at the start of this school year.
