Northside Middle School eighth-grade math co-teachers Ruby Voss and Amber Benson were recognized Monday at their school as the Association for Middle Level Education's National Educators of the Year. Voss and Benson will receive their award at a national conference in Orlando, Fla., in November.

Controversial Parental Name Change Notification Policy Fails

The Rockingham County School Board voted 3-1 on Monday against a policy that would require schools to notify parents if a student wants to be called by another name than the one that is on their school records. School Board member Lowell Fulk was absent.

Teacher shortage hamstrings special ed in Prince William County

Corie Mboh's son was referred to the Prince William County Schools Special Education program when he entered kindergarten. He was having difficulty regulating his emotions and behavior, so teachers at his school agreed he'd be best off with an individualized education program, or IEP as it's commonly referred to, and a new school: PACE East, which has since been rolled into Independence Nontraditional School.
