Fredericksburg schools seek participants for mission and vision workgroup

Fredericksburg City Public Schools is seeking members of the community to participate in the process of identifying and defining the school division's mission and vision. "The mission is a statement of our 'why' - why our schools exist, and our vision is what the overall Fredericksburg school community must become in order to accomplish our 'why," division Superintendent Marci Catlett said in a press release Monday.

'Very disruptive:' Prince William Co. police chief details who's behind most school threats - WTOP News

Prince William County Public Schools in Virginia have received 46 threats so far this year, and historically, a majority those threats were made by students, county police chief Peter Newsham told the school board Tuesday night.

Department of Education apologizes, corrects Virginia's proposed history education changes amid backlash

Superintendent of Public Instruction Jillian Balow apologized Thursday that the new draft social studies standards referred to the ancestors of Virginia's indigenous communities as "immigrants." Balow said it was an error that should have been caught and promised to correct it.

KING WILLIAM COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) - King William County Public Schools have closed for the rest of the school week due to a spike in illnesses, according to a message from the district. The school system has seen an increase in the number of confirmed flu cases, strep and other viruses that have affected staffing.

Fauquier County Public Schools Deputy Superintendent Major Warner has unveiled the initial draft of a new policy that outlines procedures for how the school division plans to identify books containing sexually explicit content and notify parents going forward.

Roanoke City School Board weighing transportation issues options, including schedule shift

Before the Roanoke City School Board began a discussion of the division's ongoing transportation problems earlier this week, parent C.P. Staley set the tone for what would follow. Staley's daughter is an elementary school student who walks to a bus stop one-tenth of a mile from her house to catch a bus scheduled to arrive at 8:04 a.m.

Pittsylvania County approves grant to add 10 school resource officers

PITTSYLVANIA COUNTY, Va. (WDBJ/Pittsylvania County Release) - The Pittsylvania County Board of Supervisors has approved the county's participation in a grant program which will allow the sheriff's office to add 10 more school resource officers. The Pittsylvania County Sheriff's Office currently has 8 SROs who work in 21 Pittsylvania County schools.

Social media threats against Huguenot High prompt increased police presence

An increased number of police will be present at Huguenot High School in Richmond on Thursday in response to violent threats circulating on Instagram against individuals at the school. Anonymous posts with derogatory claims about individual students led to fights at school, and now violent threats against groups of people at the school, according to a top school district official.

Prince William police confiscated 14 guns from county schools over the last two years, including nine during the 2021-22 school year and five, so far, this year, Prince William County Police Chief Peter Newsham told school board members Tuesday.

New LCPS policy on controversial curriculum approved

Loudoun County Public Schools board on Tuesday passed new standards for controversial and sensitive curriculum materials. Policy 5420 defines controversial topics as those involving "significant academic, social, political or ideological matters" about which students may have opposing viewpoints and perspectives.
