Issue 1,821 - Thursday - July 2, 2009 The Petersburg School Board approved the application to the Virginia High School League for athletics last night. School Athletics Director Kerry Gray said that the application is required each year to be submitted with the sports and activities that the school system plans to participate in. The school system is required to pay a fee per student for insurance and a per activity fee. But some board members were again disappointed to see that some activities weren’t included on the list. News 7 has uncovered new information about the principal accused in the SOL scandal at William Fleming High School in Roanoke. This comes weeks after several administrators, including the principal, were accused of manipulating the outcome of the Standards of Learning test scores. News 7 has obtained a letter written to the school board back in 2005 about principal Susan Willis. It criticizes the school's leadership long before the state investigation. Fredericksburg-area: Schools Trying to Do With Less Westmoreland County School Superintendent Elaine Fogliani can add "outstanding" to her title. Citing the achievements of Westmoreland schools under her leadership, the Curry School of Education Foundation of the University of Virginia has selected Fogliani to receive its Outstanding Superintendent Award for 2009. 2009 VSBA Regional Art Contest Winners Architectural Brochure & Registration Link Mission Statement The mission of the VSBA is to provide member boards with services, training and advocacy so that they may exercise effective leadership in public school governance on behalf of public education for all children in the Commonwealth. The Virginia School Boards Association is a not-for-profit, nonpartisan organization whose primary mission is the advancement of education through the unique American tradition of local citizen control of, and accountability for, the Commonwealth's public schools. In this way, education policy is decided by local school boards who are directly accountable to the community. VSBA promotes the quality of education through services to local school boards. It represents school boards' interests before the legislature, state agencies, Congress, and other state and national regulatory bodies. Membership of the VSBA includes 134 local school boards of Virginia. Founded in 1906, VSBA represents the Commonwealth's school boards who, in turn, govern the schools attended by the public school children in Virginia.Member boards pay dues to the Association based on the amount of total funds spent on school operation. Income from dues is used to support functions and services of the Association. VSBA is governed by a Board of Directors consisting of the officers, chairmen of standing committees, at-large members, and regional chairmen. Representation comes from all regions of the state and from all sizes and types of school divisions.
