VSBA Shares Update on New Federal Interagency Agreements Announced by U.S. Department of Education
Charlottesville, VA – The Virginia School Boards Association (VSBA) is sharing highlights from a recent announcement by the U.S. Department of Education (ED) regarding six new interagency agreements designed to streamline federal education programs and reduce administrative burdens on states and local school divisions. These agreements are part of a federal effort to improve program management by partnering with agencies that have existing expertise in related areas.
According to ED, the goal of these partnerships is to ensure federal programs are delivered more efficiently, better aligned with state and local needs, and more focused on improving outcomes for students.
Overview of the New Interagency Partnerships
Partnership with the Department of Labor (DOL): K-12 and Postsecondary Programs
ED is expanding its collaboration with the Department of Labor to better align K-12 and postsecondary education programs with workforce preparation. Under these agreements, DOL will take a larger role in administering certain federal programs, supporting technical assistance, and coordinating workforce-related initiatives.
Partnership with the Department of Interior (DOI): Indian Education
DOI will assume greater responsibility for Indian Education programs, overseeing initiatives spanning K-12, higher education, and career and technical education to better serve Native American students and Tribal communities.
Partnership with the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS): Medical Accreditation & Child Care Access
Two new agreements with HHS include:
- A collaboration to support the evaluation of foreign medical school accreditation standards.
- Oversight of the Child Care Access Means Parents in School (CCAMPIS) program, aiming to streamline child-care support for student-parents enrolled in higher education.
Partnership with the Department of State: International Education Programs
The Department of State will take the lead on programs administered under the Fulbright-Hays grant, consolidating international education initiatives with existing diplomacy and global education efforts.
