About the 2026 VSBA President’s Initiative

Rooted in Public Education

The 2026 VSBA President’s Initiative, Rooted in Public Education, reflects a shared belief that strong schools are the foundation of strong communities and that every decision made in public education should help students grow, thrive, and reach their full potential.

To be rooted in public education is to recognize that vibrant communities begin with thriving schools. It represents a commitment to expanding opportunities that open doors for every student—supporting learning, growth, and the ability to envision what is possible. Being rooted also means standing firmly behind the educators, programs, and initiatives that nurture student success and empower students to reach new heights.

Throughout the year, Rooted in Public Education will highlight the programs, partnerships, and opportunities that shape student outcomes and showcase the stories that demonstrate how strong public schools influence students’ futures. From strengthening literacy and expanding workforce and technology pathways to supporting student well-being, the initiative focuses on creating conditions that allow every student—and the communities they become part of—to truly prosper.

As part of launching the initiative, a short video public service announcement has been developed to share the purpose and vision behind Rooted in Public Education and to encourage Virginians to engage in this important work.

School divisions across the Commonwealth are invited to share how they are rooted in public education. Submissions may feature innovative programs that prepare students for life after graduation, student achievements, educator excellence, or community partnerships that expand opportunity and reflect the heart of local efforts.

The initiative aims to collect at least one Rooted in Public Education story from each VSBA member school division during the year. Stories may be submitted as written narratives or short videos recorded on a mobile device.

Submissions should be sent to the appropriate regional chair and to VSBA at communications@vsba.org, with the school division name included. The deadline for submissions is October 30, 2026.

When public education is deeply rooted, possibilities for students are limitless. By lifting up everyday successes across Virginia’s public schools, this initiative celebrates the lasting impact of public education on students, communities, and future generations.
